A Holistic Approach on Cellulite Treatment

For a woman, maintaining a healthy body goes beyond getting the proper nutrition and the right amount of food. It’s actually far more than that. Most women want to have a beautiful and sexy body to complete the projected feminine appeal. Although the issue is somewhat vague owing to the fact that a beautiful and sexy female body are interpreted differently among various people, the consensus remains that anybody who does not measure up to the accepted standard of beauty is considered unhealthy.

Cellulite Accumulation and Its Impact

One factor that may cause a woman to lose her appeal is the accumulation of cellulite in the body. This condition affects women more than it affects men and its presence is an infraction to the appeal of women more than for men. Cellulite accumulation is commonly manifested in the limb areas, in the pelvic region, and in other parts of the body after puberty. Because the presence of cellulite is such a big deal for women because it destroys their figure, the condition was given a multitude of names, all of which indicates an aversion towards the condition and for the person having them.

Causes of Cellulite Formation

The causes of cellulite accumulation are not as clear as the efforts to eradicate them. This is because a variety of possible causes has been put forward such as genetic, lifestyle, diet, hormonal changes, and many others. Among these causes, diet and lifestyle are the commonly found causes of cellulite accumulation. Moreover, these causes are also the easiest to treat without the need for medication.

Suggested Treatment for Cellulite Formation

A holistic approach to cellulite treatment does not only involve the understanding of factors contributing to their appearance. It also includes understanding the different applications that can be used for treating the condition. When treatment of cellulite is considered, the following are the most common options:

* Mechanical method. This involves the use of several laboratory processes such as ultrasound, thermotherapy, and lymphatic drainage. All of these processes involve the application of heat and pressure or a combination of both to help melt down cellulite.

*  Physical methods. Massage is the most common physical methodology employed. During a massage, pressure is exerted on the affected area and the repeated pressings will help the skin go back to its healthy state.

*  Herbal medication. There are several herbs and other “green” medicines that are used for treating cellulites. These commonly act against fat accumulation by breaking them down in the process, thereby helping to eliminate cellulite. Some drugs are for topical application only while others are to be taken internally. The most advanced drugs are administered via injections beneath the skin, although these drugs are far more costly.

*  Garments. The use of compression garments or shape wear helps the body to grow according to the form of the wear. This way, the garment is actually “guiding” the body to develop shapely.

Heat Exhaustion-Heatstroke-Getting Your Child to Drink More Water

I am a Massachusetts resident and each year, I dread the winter and welcome the summer. I’m always advertising how much I despise air conditioning. It seems to clog my sinuses and is like a shock to the system when coming in from the heat. The transition from hot to ice cold also gives me a stomachache so I usually prefer to use a fan or just sweat it out. I normally would rather fresh air to stale air conditioning but I must state that today is an exception.

The weather is tropical in New England this week and it seems that air conditioning is the only relief to this 100-degree weather. I had new tires put on my car yesterday and I thought it would be fun just to take a little walk outside and sit on the bench to watch the birds. The silence was nice after having such a busy week. The weather was hot but it was still fairly early so I figured it would be okay to down a nice cold iced-coffee. I wasn’t keeping in mind how dehydrating caffeine can be and the fact that the coffee was on ice didn’t really matter.

I ran errands after I had my tires replaced and neglected to drink water until early afternoon. Why do we do this to ourselves? As grown adults, we are well aware that drinking plenty of water is an absolute necessity in this weather but many of us shrug it off assuming that we can drink a few glasses later on and we’ll be okay. Don’t get me wrong, I love water and usually drink plenty of it, but I was running around and didn’t feel like stopping to buy some. I paid for my procrastination yesterday with a headache and exhaustion. I decided to cleanup the house a bit in the afternoon and I realized I was dehydrated when I became so weak that I could barely bend over to pick up my daughter’s toys from the floor. So much for my vacation day!

Don’t let this happen to you! It is not fun to ruin a beautiful vacation day (or any day for that matter) by allowing yourself to become dehydrated, especially during a heat wave. We just assume we can do whatever we want in the heat as long as we are tough enough to stick it out, but are we smart enough to know when to stop? You’ve heard it before that the elderly, young children and those who exercise regularly are most at risk for heat exhaustion or heat stroke. We hear these warnings on the news and learn about shelters willing to take in anyone who wants to cool off, but how many people heed this advice? It’s more fun to stay in the privacy of your own home and do what you want to do rather than hang out with a bunch of strangers at a shelter. Exercising is great for your body and mind, but it’s not going to benefit you to go jogging in 100-degree weather. Let it wait or go to an air-conditioned gym, run on the treadmill and drink water! The point is that none of us want to be taken away from our daily routine or inconvenienced in any way simply because it’s hot out.

Why I Prefer Multi Grain And Fortified Pastas

Whole grain and whole wheat food products have been all the rage during the past few years. Although these products offer great nutritional value in the form of fiber, are they the best choice? Some people don’t think so. In fact, multi grain and fortified pastas might be a better choice. Here are the facts.

Multi grain pasta – It is the middle of the road between whole grain and white pasta. You can think of it as refined grain with some whole grain benefit. It has four grams of fiber per serving, compared to seven grams in whole grain and two grams in white. With ten grams of protein per serving, it provides the most amount of protein out of all the different types of pastas. It also provides a host of other essential vitamins and nutrients such as zinc, magnesium, and vitamin E. Because it provides so much nutritional value, some experts say it is actually a healthier choice than the much touted whole grain pastas.

Fortified pastas – This type of pasta takes multi grain to a whole new level. Multigrain flour is mixed in with ingredients such as chickpeas, lentils, egg whites, and flaxseed. They are added to increase the pasta’s nutritional value. Like multi grain pastas, a serving of fortified pastas will typically have ten grams of protein and four grams of fiber, plus a wide array of other important vitamins and minerals.

The advantage of eating fortified pastas is you benefit when the fortifying ingredients are of great nutritional value themselves, such as flaxseeds. Flaxseeds provide Omega 3 fatty acids, which have been shown to promote better heart health. One other advantage to eating fortified pastas is their lower glycemic index, which means that you get a steady stream of blood sugar instead of the large spike that you get from white pasta.

Not Acceptable In The 80′s

Thankfully, attitudes to male grooming, style and self improvement have changed dramatically over the last 20 years. Obviously, some people used to dress in a fashionable way for the time, this has always been acceptable as keeping up with fashion and trends has always been important for both men and women alike.

The main differences in attitudes have really been noticed in the areas of grooming and self improvement. For example, if you’d offered a facial moisturiser to 99% of men 30 or 40 years ago then they’d probably have laughed at you and told you where to go. Grooming for men never used to be seen as a hugely acceptable thing. Again, there were the obvious exceptions for shaving and hair styling but that was pretty much it. If you consider all the things that most men take for granted now such as moisturisers, aftershaves, beard trimmers, facial creams and even facial scrubs, then you can quickly see how times and attitudes have changed.

The other big attitude change is to self improvement through diet and exercise. In the past, people’s perception of the people that went to gyms was of muscle bound men who spent their time posing around and had nothing better to do. Today, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Gym memberships, sports supplements and bodybuilding supplements are huge areas of growth as both men and women aim to improve the way they look. Gym memberships provide the perfect opportunity to work on all different areas of the body and help all different kinds of people achieve their own individual goals. Sports supplements such as those available from mybodybuildingsuperstore.com are the perfect aid to help you on the way to good physical fitness. They help to improve energy and muscle which are key to physical self improvement.

Vitamin C: The Overlooked Miracle Drug

Vitamin C – The Overlooked Miracle Drug

In medical school, there is little or no time spent on vitamins, and thousands of hours of instructions spent on pharmaceuticals (drugs).  As a result, most MD’s are “educationally handicapped” about vitamins.

In the days of “wooden ships and iron men”, the most dreaded disease was scurvy.  It was the result of a lack of vitamin C.  Captain Cook and others found that a little bit of lemon or lime juice every few days prevented it, and kept their sailors better able to do their duty to King and Country.  This is where the term “limey” came to be applied to English sailors.

THE MYTH:  At the beginning of the last century, the then US government became somewhat more worried about the public health than today’s government, and funded several cereal companies to research and find a minimum amount of vitamins that would prevent the deficiency diseases of scurvy, pellagra, and beri-beri.

Of course, the cereal companies were mostly concerned about pellagra and beri-beri, (deficiencies of niacin – then known as B3, and a deficiency of B2.  They already knew that a lime a day or so prevented scurvy.  So, they set up a MINIMUM DAILY ALLOWANCE (MDA) chart. It was (and is) designed to just be enough to prevent these three terrible deficiency diseases.  It has been modified and added to along the way.

Also, along the way, the food industry lobbied successfully to change that name to “Recommended Daily Allowance”.  This sounds better, and it leads the public to believe (as they now do) that this RDA is somehow good enough for good health.  The RDA is definitely NOT sufficient for good health.  That’s the myth that has been promoted by advertising.  The RDA amounts are barely enough to prevent bad health.  Particularly with vitamin C.

Because of this wide belief, even researchers are misled.  Since the RDA for vitamin C is only 75 mg (about an orange a day), then anything 5-10 times that amount MUST be a “megadose”.  And that amount is used to test vitamin C, and to “scientifically prove” that  vitamin C cannot cure a cold, a flu, or a virus borne disease at all.  Take any such “studies” with a salt shaker – they are false!

What isn’t well known is the actual RDA for “good health”.  It turns out that  is about 4000 mg (4 grams) of vitamin C per day per 150 pounds of every primate.  Every zoo vet knows this and since a 150 pound ape is very valuable, they carefully make sure that they get this amount in food and supplemental vitamin C.  Since vitamin C only lasts in the bloodstream for 4 hours or so, splitting up any dosage Is best.  I use 2 grams  AM and PM for this reason.

You should know that all primates, including the apes (and us) lost a very important enzyme some 65 million years ago that chemically changed glucose (blood sugar) into Vitamin C in the blood.  Virtually all other animals actually manufacture vitamin C in their bodies, increasing it with stress and or disease.  That’s why cats, dogs, vultures, and other animals can eat dead meat loaded with bacteria and not get sick.  (if we could get that enzyme back, we’d be very healthy with all the junk food that transforms into glucose.)  Oh well!

That ratio of about 4 grams per 150 pounds of body weight seems to be a pretty good one for establishing “good health” guidelines for vitamin C.  A small mouse generates a proportional average amount of vitamin C daily.  So does a cow, or an elephant.  The actual amounts that are generated depend on how much is needed to combat any stress, fight germs, etc.  Studies show that most animals can generate 10 times this average as needed.

I weigh about 200 pounds, and I eat  enough whole  fruits so that I believe that 4 grams per day is right for me.  I take 2 grams with breakfast, and 2 more grams at supper, leaving the noon for taking of other vitamins and minerals.  This way, the supplemental minerals needed aren’t taken out of the bloodstream by the vitamin C too fast.

VITAMIN C AND “GERMS”:  Probably the most important job that vitamin C does is kill bacteria and virus cells in the bloodstream.  Let’s call them both “germs” for simplicity.    Remember that this killing is only effective in the bloodstream.  If “germs” get into an organ or a cell, vitamin C cannot reach them.

Vitamin C kills invaders by combining with them, and this uses up the available vitamin C fairly quickly.  Bacteria and viruses multiply quickly.  Both double in about 20 minutes.  This means that if you take only enough vitamin C to kill off half of the invader before being used up, in another 20 minutes, the invader is back up to the previous strength.

Very few of those scientists use much more than a few grams of C in their tests.  In most of the studies I’ve seen, only 500 to 2000 mg is used.  That might kill half of the invaders as in the example above.  Or, let’s be very generous.  Let’s say that this researcher actually used a dose that kills off 99% of the invaders.  Would you believe that it only takes 140 minutes to get back to original strength?    No wonder that so many so-called “scientific tests” show that vitamin C isn’t effective against colds and flu’s and other problems.  If you take 1/10 of an aspirin, it probably won’t cure a headache either!

The above is why it is necessary to saturate the blood with vitamin C, and keep it saturated for some time in order to kill all the invaders.  This takes massive amounts of vitamin C.  Now you see why some of the “scientific studies” on vitamin C are not so scientific at all.  Again, a clear case of educationally handicapped.

VITAMIN C AND BOWEL TOLERANCE;  While it is impossible to harm yourself by overdosing on vitamin C, there is a point where the “overdose” causes diarrhea.  This is actually a very interesting signal.  Where this saturation point is for any individual is different, and dependent on several factors,   Bowel tolerance is used by alternate therapists to determine actual saturation level.  Overdose until that point where diarrhea just starts, then cut down to just below that point.

The problem is how to cut down to that “point” just before diarrhea.  Cut down too little and you run the risk of the “germs” recovering, multiplying, and getting out of hand again.  Too much, and diarrhea may cause dehydration.  (Diarrhea ain’t much fun anyway.)

Whenever I even think I might have a flu or cold coming on, I start taking 2 grams every hour until I just start diarrhea.  Then I cut to every 2 hours or maybe every 2.5 hours trying to keep the bloodstream saturated with vitamin C, and trying to just keep at that point between blood saturation and diarrhea.

As the “germs” are killed, that bowel tolerance gets lower and lower, so you have to keep cutting back just to the point below diarrhea.

If you don’t get to that bowel tolerance, then you didn’t get enough vitamin C.  I’ve seen patients get to 65 grams of vitamin C in one day.  I sometimes get to over 40 grams in a day with flu, but it’s over in 24 hours.

VITAMIN C AND CANCER:  Vitamin C research on cancer isn’t new at all.  Our only two time Nobel prize winner – Linus Pauling – wrote at length on this subject.   He did a research in Scotland with 100 “terminal” cases of cancer and 1000 other “terminal” cases used as controls.  (Terminal cases means that the persons have an estimated 3-6 months to live).  The test patients got 10 grams per day in divided doses, and the controls got none.

The results were startling.  As I recall, about 80-90% of the controls had died while most of the tested ones were still living.  At the end, all the controls died, while at least 40-50% of the tested ones were alive, and many of those were still alive 5 years later after full remission.

Once again, education handicap is present,  Few MD’s realize that it takes very large amounts of vitamin C to saturate the blood, and without this, the virus wins because of the reproduction rate.  Adding vitamin C via injection is much simpler for large amounts.

Cancer has been found to be “mediated” by virus cells for many cancers.   However, there are several cancers – prostate, cervical, vagina and breast cancers that are mediated by hormones, and vitamin C is impotent against these.

An ironic fact:  Linus actually died from prostate cancer, yet he was taking 18 grams a day of vitamin C.  That mediation factor was unknown to him obviously.

As you can easily see, that RDA figure of 75 mg is woefully short, and leaves us very susceptible to both bacterial and viral diseases.

Vitamin C and Chelation:   This brings us to one of most important uses of vitamin C – chelation of minerals, particularly the heavy metals which are toxic in very small quantit6ies.

Chelate means to “grab onto”, and there are several different chelators used today.  The “standard” is a chemical called EDTA, and you can sit in an MD’s office with a needle in your arm for an hour, a couple of times per week for a few months or more, and it will take out any heavy metal that is toxic.

While vitamin C isn’t a true chelator, it works the same magic of removing minerals from the bloodstream.  It does it by combining with all minerals (good and bad) and making a new chemical out of the combination that is water soluble.  This means that it can be filtered out by the kidneys and excreted by the urine pathway.

Remember that it takes out ALL minerals, so you MUST supplement with needed minerals while chelating out all.

A new one called zeolite has had mixed reports, and there are several more touted on some alternate health web sites.  I cannot recommend them, as I have no experience with them.

The problem is that so-called heavy metals are toxic to human in even small amounts.  These include mercury, arsenic, lead, cadmium, and even excess copper.  (I worked with several schizophrenic persons with excess copper chelating it out successfully in my former practice.)

Since I was not an MD, I couldn’t prescribe EDTA or other chelators.  So, I learned that vitamin C works just as well as any chelator.  It also has several advantages over the commercial chelation therapies as well.  First, the cost is much lower.  Next, you have much better overall health while getting the problem solved, even if it takes a year or two.  Last, and certainly not least, there is no danger whatsoever.

YOU CAN’T OVERDOSE ON VITAMIN C!  The worst that can happen, even to a baby, is that it may cause diarrhea.

There are some MD’s that have been using chelation for years to take out excess calcium.  Remember that vitamin C takes out all minerals, so while chelating in any way, you have to put back in the “good” minerals your body needs.  (This is why you should take any mineral supplements at least 4 hours after taking vitamin C.)

One good idea here is to get the calcium so low that even the calcium that is the “backbone” of the plaque in the arteries and veins is taken out.  The rest of the plaque consists of fat deposits that are washed away by the bloodstream easily.  This therapy is much cheaper than by-pass surgery and much safer with no deaths recorded.   I recommend using it instead of by-pass surgery.

Mineral Measurement:  There are several ways to measure all the minerals, but none are very accurate.  If you measure the blood, you get a measurement of what it was when the sample was taken, and that may be very different a few hours later.

Because all minerals are excreted thru urine, a sample there is slightly better, although it also can vary widely.  A 24 hour collection is much more accurate.

Another excretion route for minerals is the hair and fingernails.  The bloodstream deposits the minerals into those cells.  Hair is a perfect biopsy material.  It doesn’t spoil, and can be shipped across country in a simple envelope.

This method is pretty accurate, but there’s a confusion factor.  There is a huge difference between the minerals that are needed in the body, and toxic minerals.  The minerals that are toxic are recognized and are very quickly taken out of the bloodstream by the liver and stored in various places in the attempt to keep them out of the brain where they may cause actual brain damage.

Since the ratios of these toxic minerals are measured against the “regular” needed minerals,
If there is little or no chelating agent in the blood stream, the brain will not release those toxic minerals from storage.
In autistic children, the levels of vitamin C and glutathione (natural chelators) are often found very low.  Supplementation of glutathione doesn’t seem to be very effective, and most MD’s don’t even know about vitamin C as a chelator.  So, the result of tests for mercury in many autistic children often shows up negative, even if the child is loaded with mercury in storage.

This, in my opinion is part of the controversy about mercury in vaccines causing autism.  The usual testing for mineral toxicity just isn’t accurate enough for these children.

If you want to test your mineral status, and particularly your toxic mineral status, start loading up on vitamin C for at least a few days prior to either a blood or urine test, and a couple of months before a hair analysis.  This pre-loading allows the release of any toxic minerals from storage into the bloodstream and subsequent excretion.

One last point about vitamin C.  It is made from corn sugar (dextrose).  There are many people in the US who are allergic to corn.  If anyone has allergic reactions to multiple vitamins, it’s often because of corn allergy, and it’s “unknown” as such to the person.  If this is the case, you will have to use Calcium Ascorbate instead of plain Ascorbic Acid.  The CA form is generally non allergenic.

The Ubiquitous Foods

The Ubiquitous Foods – Often Allergic
By Phil Bate PhD

The Definition of Ubiquitous – Existing or being everywhere, or in all places, at the same time; omnipresent.

There are many foods or additives in our culture today that are truly ubiquitous.  Soy and corn are two of the most ubiquitous of foods, and both are close to the top of the list of allergenic foods.  Milk is another ubiquitous food.

In addition to foods, we have a whole list of ubiquitous additives.  These are preservatives used to keep foods from spoiling too soon for the market.  (What do these do to we humans?)  Other additives enhance the flavor,

It’s only in fairly recent times that this is so.  Only a hundred years or so ago, this was not a problem.  Our forebears only ate what was available to them, and the modern chemistry wasn’t available.  “Better Living Thru Chemistry” – bah humbug!

It’s well known to allergy researchers that eating the same foodstuffs over and over can cause both allergies and food sensitivities to become active.  The same goes for additives causing chemical sensitivities.

Let’s look at corn first.  Now, there’s even genetically modified corn – basically different – and a “new” food in effect.  Our bodies do not have many generations of use to get used to this new food.  Since corn (and beans) were discovered in the “new world” of the Americas  relatively recently insofar as evolution is concerned, only the various “Indians” are immune to these foods as they have been eating them as a staple for thousands of years.

Scientists have found that this genetically modified corn is actually dangerous to many humans, and it’s been banned for human use, and supposedly may only be used for animal feed.  (What happens to these molecules in the animals that we are eating?)

If you believe this “ban” is effective, I have some stock in a bridge connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan that you’ll want.  Genetic engineering of corn is done because it’s cheaper to grow.  Given the profit incentive, and human greed, it is a sure thing bet that this corn, known to be dangerous, is in the human food chain.  That’s a no-brainer!

Corn was already one of the top allergenic foods, and this genetic modification makes it even worse!  Corn is responsible for more chronic headaches than any other substance.  While I was in active practice, I found that taking patients off all corn products (more difficult to do all the time) “cured” most chronic headaches, including those of my wife!

Talk about ubiquitous?  Corn is in virtually everything.  In Florida, there are only two breads out of hundreds on the shelves that do not contain corn.  Almost everything that is “sweet” contains corn sugar (dextrose).  It’s cheaper than plain old sugar.  Pick up a dozen cans or bottles or boxes in your super market, and read the labels.  Look for the words: dextrose, dextrin, corn syrup, starch, modified starch, etc.  I’ll wager that 9 or 10 will have these words somewhere in the list of ingredients.  Can you really think that none of these have come from genetically engineered corn?  And even if that’s not true, this amount of corn in different forms causes allergic problems, that few people are even aware of.

Soy is another ubiquitous food.  Look at the packages of “finger foods” such as chips, or almost anything fried.    Depending on the crop and time of year, Soybean oil or corn oil is the cheapest (both are simply labeled “vegetable oil), so naturally one (or both) are used in almost all products that require oil.  Frying with either creates “trans-fats” known to be dangerous to all of us.

I happen to be allergic to soy.  My symptoms include “tennis elbow”, and various joint and muscle pain.  There is only one brand of bread I can eat regularly.  There is only one “snack food” I can eat.  Virtually all chocolate contains soy lecithin. How many other people are allergic or sensitive to soy and are suffering various symptoms, completely unaware that this is an allergy?    (If you’d like a list of possible allergy symptoms to check, go to:  http://www.DrBate.com.  Click on Alternate-Health, and then click on Allergy. This list is hard to believe for most! )

Soy is also unusual in that it contains the female hormone estrogen.  Many researchers now are wondering if this is a major reason for younger and younger sexual maturation of young girls in our culture.  (Asian girls have matured earlier for a long time.)  Is this a good thing?

Milk is another ubiquitous food.  However, unlike corn and soy, it has been used for thousands of years, and most people are not allergic or sensitive to it.  It’s in everything, from cheese to glue.

Because of the lack of refrigeration, milk was not drunk by adults very much until recently.  This may be responsible for many adults becoming “intolerant” to milk.  It is thought that this is a sort of “use it or lose it” in human evolution.  We have lost an enzyme that is needed to correctly digest milk in the gut.  If the milk isn’t digested, it ferments and causes methane gas – smelly and noisy in most.  (60 million years ago or so, we lost another very important enzyme that transforms blood sugar (glucose) into vitamin C!)

And, there’s another factor to consider.  When I was a boy, milk came in glass bottles, and the cream was at the top.  If you wanted “whole milk” you had to shake it up.   Then “modern” science came along, and milk became “homogenized”.  This method actually breaks up the milk molecules into smaller molecules.  One of the large molecules that’s broken up into smaller ones was not digested in the original form, but passed thru the gut.  One or more of the smaller molecules created by this large molecule breakup was in a form that the brain of some people decided was allergic.  (I’m one of those – I can eat cheese, and some ice creams, but only non-homogenized milk.  It’s pasteurized, but NOT homogenized. Few stores even carry it today.)

Another important factor in milk today is the antibiotic addition.  Most cow herds have various diseases such as tuberculosis in some or many of the cows.  About half of the antibiotics used in the world today are used for animals.  Is this part of the reason that bacteria is becoming resistant to many antibiotics?  There are still a few “certified” herds that can produce non-pasteurized AND non-homogenized milk that is really fit to drink.  But, it’s not cheap, or easy to obtain!

Unfortunately, few people are even aware of the above, and fewer still ever read the labels, and/or think about what might be causing their symptoms.  The profit system in all our foods puts most of us at risk.  Oh well…….

A Basic Vitamin/Mineral Supplementation

A Basic Vitamin/Mineral Supplementation

Most people think that vitamin and mineral supplements are pretty much alike. This is partly due to the health food manufacturers grouping them in one or more pills. The truth however, is very different, and needs to be understood clearly.
Vitamins are non-toxic (with a few exceptions) and overdosing merely means possibly “wasting” money, as the excess is excreted easily without damage. So, since vitamins are relatively cheap, by “overdosing” you are assuring your body enough for good health, even if some is “wasted”.

The exceptions to the above are the oil-based vitamins. These are A, D, K, and E. These are stored in the liver, and may cause toxic problems over time. That’s the bad news – the good news is that it’s very difficult to “overdose” on any of these today. The. FDA laws strictly limit dosages of these. An adult can safely take up to 25,000 (International Units (IU) per day of vitamin A, and up to 2000 IU of vitamin D. Vitamin E levels of over 1600 IU per day have shown no toxic effects (probably because E is used up in the body as an antioxidant). Few people even take K, as it is mostly manufactured within the body by “friendly” bacteria in the gut.  All the B complex, and C complex vitamins are water soluble, and any excess simply goes out the urine pathway.

Each person absorbs both vitamins and/or minerals differently. This is individuality. One person may require 10 times more than a vitamin (or mineral) than another – in the same family. Another reason for taking much more than you might actually need. For example, some survivors of war prison camps actually required up to 100 times of some of the B complex vitamins than is “normally” required for health. This is due to vitamin deficiencies suffered and this trauma caused the ability to absorb these vitamins to change.
Minerals are very different and even nutritional minerals can become toxic.
One example is copper, necessary for manufacturing blood, but causing depression and schizophrenia when too much is absorbed and stored. Of course, mercury, arsenic, cadmium (smokers), lead, and aluminum are all known to cause brain problems in toxic amounts.
The “balance” of certain minerals with others is very important to health as well. For example, the balance of calcium to magnesium is important as these two form the electrical battery that keeps the heart beating. They also provide calcium to make bones and fingernails, and magnesium is required for many enzymes needed at each chemical step from blood calcium to bone calcium.
Sodium and potassium are another pair that supply the power to move material into and out of cells in the body. There are many more such balances.  My book, “The Health Revolution” may be found on the website below has much more info on vitamins and minerals.
Many people think that because they take a popular advertised multi-vitamin with the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) they are OK. Even worse are the cereal ads that depend on the RDA!  WRONG!  No competent nutritionist or person who has studied vitamins believes this false and misleading advertising “spin”.
The RDA was originally set up many years ago as a result of a study by labs. Guess what? These labs were at General Foods, Kellogg’s, and Nabisco. A very definite vested interest indeed!   In addition, it was originally set up as the MDA   (Minimum Daily Allowance.  That’s a MINIMUM of each vitamin or mineral to needed to PREVENT the nutritional deficiency diseases of scurvy, pellagra, and beri-beri.  The ads would have us believe these amounts are the minimum (or recommended) for “good health”.  Not so!
The fact is that these once daily popular vitamin supplements do a lot of harm, because too many people think that they are getting good supplementation.  They will prevent actual deficiency diseases – that’s true enough, but they do not have enough to ensure even fair health.
75 mg of Vitamin C is about the amount in one orange, and while it may keep a person from severe scurvy, it isn’t even close for good health.  The RDA for a 150 pound primate (ape for example) is 4000mg (4 grams).  Since all primates (including us) have the same basic body needs for vitamin C, how does 75 mg make for good health?  Apes are very expensive – are you less so?
The RDA might only keep you from very severe nutritional diseases! For better health you need much more, as every competent nutritionist can tell you.
With the above factors in mind, the following basic list is what I have been recommending to my family, friends, students, and patients for many years. All have experienced better health as a result, some dramatically. This is the “basic” list, and additions should be made for individual needs. (See my book for much more information such as B6 for PMS, E for heart, and much more).
For the “average” person in fairly good health, I recommend Solgar VM75 1/day or equivalent, preferably taken with, or after, breakfast. This supplies the base amounts of B complex, natural E, D, A, and a good average daily amount of minerals.
I have been recommending and using Solgar VM-75 (found in most independent health food stores) for many years with excellent results.  However, it’s true that the water soluble vitamins only last 4-8 hours in the body, so twice a day supplementation may be somewhat better than once a day, if you are not quite so healthy. (I still take the VM-75, and I’m in pretty good health for my age – 81 (2008).
Four Grams of additional Vitamin C. (4000 mg). Preferably split with 2gm AM and 2gm PM. This is a MINIMUM for continued good health. In the cold/flu season, make it 3 AM and 3 PM minimum.  What is not well known is that Vitamin C is both a bactericide and a viricide.  However, you have to saturate the blood to kill ALL of either present.  If this is not done, and even a few are left – they quickly get back to strength.  They double in numbers in about 200 minutes.  If you know binary math, from 1 microbe to 1 million microbes in less that 400 minutes!
By the way, Vitamin C in these amounts will also tend to prevent mineral toxicity, as Vitamin C joins with all excess minerals in the blood, makes them water soluble and takes them out via the urine route.
Some form of additional calcium and magnesium is also a good idea, but here the guidelines are pretty blurred.  Unless the calcium intake is balanced with the magnesium intake, there will usually be an excess of blood calcium.  This causes those pesky and painful bone spurs, kidney stones, calcium deposits in various parts of the body, etc.
The “usual” recommendation for calcium found in most nutritional books is a 2/1 ratio of Ca/Mg.  I have been convinced by results that this is NOT correct for most persons in our culture.  I recommend that equal or near equal amounts are used as supplementation
In our present culture with a lot of meat and dairy products, not to mention the media hype about calcium – and the fewer amounts of leafy vegetables consumed, we usually get too much more calcium and too little magnesium. Without magnesium (and other vitamins and minerals), the blood calcium can’t get changed chemically into bone calcium. Accordingly, I now recommend that these supplements be more closely balanced. For a more accurate indication of how much to take, a hair analysis will give you much better ratios and recommendations for better mineral balance.
Summary of Basic MINIMUM Supplements
Multi equal to VM-75 1/day (Children from 9 years old to 17 can take ½ VM-75)
Vitamin C – 4 Grams (4000 mg) per 150 lbs of weight- more in flu season. Children by body weight.
Additional Vitamin E – After 30 – add 400 IU per day.  After 50 – add 600 IU per day.
Calcium/magnesium – As stated above, this depends on your diet. If you eat meat and/or dairy products, you need to balance this calcium intake with magnesium. I now recommend taking approximately the same amount of magnesium as calcium. While the correct ratio of intake is 2/1, meat and particularly dairy eaters get much more calcium in their diets without supplementation, and therefore need more magnesium for balance.
There are many additional vitamins/minerals and/or other supplements that should be added to the above “basic” regime, depending on individual needs.  While the above is a very good basic regimen, and if you aren’t in pretty good health, you will feel better within a day or so after starting on it.  At 79 years old, I’m in pretty good health, and I’ve been taking it for over 25 years.   I hope this helps you and yours.

Fitness Tips Anyone Can Use For Fast Motivation

People’s actions are usually motivated by self interest. Fitness is a good example of this, as exercising is something you do to improve yourself. You want to look and feel better, and that’s nothing you need to apologize for! Besides, when you get older in your senior years, you want to be able to get up and do things. There is really an ultimate moment of truth for all of us. It is that time when we will either decide to work hard to stay motivated, or simply give up and never do it. We all know lots of people are in the latter category. But the decision rests with each one of us, individually. Keep on reading, and you will learn three powerful fitness tips to get you motivated and keep you that way.

Not everyone is motivated in the same way, whether we’re talking about fitness or something else. Writing down your reasons for wanting to exercise is a technique you may find helpful. Writing down ideas as they come into your head can be very interesting, and you never know what you’ll come up with. When you write something down, it also acquires a more solid kind of reality. It’s also a good idea to write down any fitness goals you would like to achieve. It’s a good idea to choose goals that you consider realistic. If you’re a sociable person by nature, it might be difficult for you to exercise by yourself. If this is you, then you should find some people to work out with. If your friends are too sedentary for this, find some new people to work out with. Wherever you live, you can find activities that are healthy. Your new fitness group could go for a run, a hike, a bike ride or a speed walk. There are so many forms of exercise that it’s not hard to come up with alternatives if you think about it.

Be careful of the mistake of feeling like you have to completely transform yourself overnight. In various ways, people have unrealistic expectations about what’s possible. What usually happens then is, they don’t get the results they wanted so they quit. You’re much better off starting off slowly. Make sure you have short term as well as long range goals. There’s no reason to rush, just take your time. Just focus on doing your best every day, and the results will come. You can speed it up when you build some kind of momentum, and you should.

Just remember there are many components involved, but just keep it as simple as possible. Take small steps each day; no need to burn down the barn and impress everyone. You will find that your chances of success are much higher if you take baby steps and, most importantly, form new daily habits that include daily activity such as exercise.
